Soloing Onyxia
((Originally posted to Shadowsteel forums))
One day Deliorion was feeling especially adventurous. He did not find suitable challenges in Northrend, so he turned back to old lands – and heard that Black Dragon Brood Mother Onyxia had been ravaging the countryside again. Despite his love for all things dragonkin, Deliorion felt that Onyxia needs to be dealt with.
So he headed out to the Dustwallow Marsh, making a short stop at Nat Pagle – always good to have a stiff one before a fight like this and Nat has never been out of drink.
Courage buffed, our hero continued to the Onyxias Lair. Her guards weren’t that hard… but Onyxia herself… He almost backed out of the cave, but thanks to Nat’s Incredible 200-Proof Cleaning Liquid, he dared to go on. Also, dragons do look much friendlier when they are asleep. But where was her fabled ring?
“Raise, brood mother, and face me in a battle,” he bellowed. “Only one of us will not walk out of this lair today! By the Cenarius, the days of your scheming and machinations will come to an end!”
Onyxia pushed herself slowly up before opening her eyes. She seemed somewhat dazed and confused. “It seems you need another lesson, mortals? You dare challenge the daughter of Deathwing? How fortuitous! Usually I must leave my lair in order to feed – and bears have always been my favourite snack.”
Deliorion charged. Strangely, Onyxia still seemed to be dazed, her hits missed their mark and her fiery breath hit floor far more often than Deliorion. After a while, she understood it herself and yelled “This meaningless exertion bores me. I’ll incinerate you all from above.” She spread her mighty wings and took flight, spraying down gusts of fire. At the same time, Onyxia’s whelps started to come from side tunnels to protect their mother.
Deliorion was in trouble now. He could barely reach Onyxia, but thankfully the distraction from the whelps wasn’t too bad. He ran around in the cave, trying to hit Onyxia the best he could, sometimes stopping for a quick heal.
This went on quite a while. Finally Onyxia saw that she cannot destroy her opponent this way andlanded, immediately attacking again, this time using all her abilities and skills. Mighty she was indeed! Deliorion found himself fleeing from her more then once, but every time he found courage to return.
Both of the combatants were tiring, their life force dropping lower and lower. But Deliorion saw a soft spot on her underbelly and remembered the legends about dragons. He started clawing and pounding that place – and suddenly Onyxia let out a shriek and fell down, completely and totally dead.
Only pride stopped Deliorion from doing the same. He looked at the dragon body for a moment and decided to take her head along, muttering “This will make a nice ornament on Stormwind gates”.
Indeed, when king Wrynn heard that Onyxia had been defeated, he ordered Major Mattingly to hang the head to the gate of Stormwind, in hopes that it will discourage Defias Brotherhood.
But Deliorion? He slipped away from the celebrations. Who knows where the road will take him next….
((OOC))
Hard and tough fight, lasted for ages. My fingers were tired when she finally died. It would have probably been better if I would have been bothered to read about the fight before…
Some have said that the second phase is the easiest, for me it was definitely the hardest. I could barely hit her when I was directly underneath her, so I had to follow her around in the cave while whelps were attacking as well. First and third phase were relatively easy, as my dodge skill was up and hit rating was acceptable as well (I was still about 170 from the cap, though).
Overall, long and not an easy fight. Probably all tough armor classes can do it. Definitely loads of fun, I will do it again at some point.
And what about Onyxias dazedness and her ring? That is a story for another day.
